Tigers Advance to Semifinal
ADM senior Jada Grove showcased her leadership and skill on Tuesday in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Independence during the Class 2A State Tournament quarterfinals at Lied Recreational Field in Ames. The win propels the Tigers to the semifinals, where they will face off against the top-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks tomorrow at 2:30 PM.
The match was a tense battle from the start, as neither team could break through in the first half. Both squads demonstrated strong defensive play, with standout performances from the goalkeepers. The first 40 minutes ended in a scoreless draw, leaving everything to be decided in the second half.
In the 51st minute, Grove broke the deadlock with a stunning header off an assist from freshman Rowan Crowell. The goal, which came just 10 minutes and 13 seconds into the second half, put ADM ahead 1-0. However, Independence quickly responded. Just 44 seconds later, Mustang sophomore Emelia Lange scored an unassisted goal, slipping the ball just past ADM senior goalkeeper Alayna Freeman to level the score at 1-1.
The momentum shift was short-lived, though, as ADM quickly regained control. In the 61st minute, Independence freshman Arabella Louvar was given a yellow card for a tripping violation, resulting in a penalty kick for Grove. She calmly converted the kick, sending the ball over the head of Independence goalkeeper Lindsay Beyer to put the Tigers back on top 2-1. That goal also marked a personal milestone for Grove, as it was her 100th career goal.
After the go-ahead goal, the Tigers held firm, fending off several Independence attempts to equalize and securing the 2-1 win.
With the win, ADM advances to the semifinals, where they will meet the number-one seeded Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks tomorrow afternoon.
